Christmas Books

Books are the only correct presents at Christmas. Anything else is just a terrible, terrible mistake. So here are a few for your consideration.

First up, the rather brilliant Graphic Classics from Phaidon. Like a global version of the best of British graphic design exhibition I was yammering about on here a while back. But in book form. (And they’ve got 30% off today as it’s Black Friday – which, yes, is objectively a Very Bad Thing, but books get a free pass.)

Or, how about backing Type Archived, from Richard Ardagh at New North Press: “A visual journey through typographic history. The definitive account of the legendary Type Archive provides a stunning visual tour of traditional typefounding, tracing the origins of typography and the printed word.” There are 21 days left to back the book, with two thirds of the publication cost already pledged.

Or there’s Modernist Graphic Design 1945-1980, by Ian McLaren and Tony Pritchard, published in a limited edition run by The Modernist. It’d make a fine shelf mate to Theo Inglis’s Mid-Century Modern Graphic Design book.

And of course, you can still pick up my book London Street Signs, just perfect for the typographic / transport / street furniture nerd in your life.

(That’s you that is.)

Or, if you’d rather not buy a thing, how about supporting the fantastic St Bride Library by becoming a Friend? Just £7 a month, and you’ll be helping protect an incredible collection, as well as getting a rather good discount for all their wonderful talks and events.
