Goldsmiths: Synapse

Project Type:
Branding | Print

Client:
Goldsmiths

In 2010 the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths (ICCE) launched Synapse, a workshop programme offering students in all departments at the college the opportunity to explore and develop entrepreneurial tools, to ‘map their futures’.

Adrian De La Court and Siân Prime, who ran the programme, asked me to put a booklet together which summarised the programme and its work. I designed a simple, and cost-effective, A5 saddle stitched booklet, with a textured emboss on the cover, all printed digitally in a short run.

I went on to design an identity for the programme, creating a logo based on a series of nodes that mark out the letter S. The nodes are joined by connecting lines, forming both a supportive scaffold, and a structure through which ideas flow. A colourful gradient represents the diversity of thought and experience amongst the staff and students of the programme.

I then worked with Richard Hall from Turney & Hall to put together a programme website – a place to discover the toolkits that the Synapse team had created for young entrepreneurs, as well as an online archive for news about their regular festival of inspiring talks, the Sustainable Enterprise London Festival, for which I also designed an identity. The site uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, a font commissioned by the Braille Institute to improve legibility and readability for people with low vision.
